Removing the intimidation from regulations
Yippiekiyay is a small startup that wants to be the Turbotax of nonprofit organizations, providing online forms and assistance to navigate the complex IRS regulations required for 501(c)3 status. It is a massive roadblock of requirements that is both overwhelming and intimidating. After long discussions with the founders and a competitive analysis, I broke down their system into clear steps for filing, funding and compliance. The site begins with a simple checkbox survey that locates where a business is on their nonprofit journey and recommends a relevant plan.
Based on internal documents, marketing material and magazine interviews with the founders, I structured the information, wrote the headlines and copy for the site, and designed the screens as well as print collateral. After five years, the company is still using my messaging and copy: “Mission Control for Nonprofits!” “Where are you on the journey?” “Don’t spend your time figuring out forms. Focus on your mission.” The simple has longevity.
